The World Health Organization (WHO) comprises several committees and agencies. One of these agencies, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), reviewed the carcinogenic classification of ETU in 2001.
After extensive evaluation, IARC reached key conclusions about ETU:
- The cancer classification of ETU was assigned to Group 3 – not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans based on the accepted threshold mechanism for thyroid tumor formation in laboratory animals.
- ETU was classified as non genotoxic.
